TITLE: Insurance Coverage

POLICY

The District has commercial property, commercial inland marine (computerized business equipment), general liability, crime, boiler, and miscellaneous insurance coverage provided by private insurance providers coordinated through the Asset Protection Agency, Inc., 1466 28th Street, Suite 100, West Des Moines, IA 50266. Automobile insurance is provided through the Farm Bureau Insurance Company, 5400 University Avenue, West Des Moines, IA 50266. The District has a fidelity bond to cover employee theft/dishonesty on and off premises through St. Paul Travelers. The District is afforded legal assistance through the Iowa Department of Justice, Iowa Attorney General’s Office in cases involving civil liability, except where that liability is proven to be due to negligence. The District provides group medical insurance coverage at no cost or nominal cost to single covered employees and at “state” rates for family or double–covered partners. Workers’ Compensation coverage is provided through a third-party provider, Sedgwick Claims, 12119 Stratford Drive, Clive, IA 50325 in cooperation with the State of Iowa.

PROCEDURES

Each year, the Asset Protection Agency, Inc. meets with the Administrative Officer of the Fifth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services to see if the insurance needs of the District have changed. Following this meeting, Asset Protection contacts the individual insurance carrier for each area of insurance required, and updates the policy for the coming year. Asset Protection reviews the new individual policies with the Administrative Officer following the updates, and delivers a copy of the individual policies to the Administrative Officer. Should the need for a new type of insurance arise, Asset Protection will seek out the best policy for the best price and present it to the Administrative Officer. The Administrative Officer maintains control over the copies of the collective policies provided by Asset Protection Agency, Inc. The District is afforded legal assistance through the Iowa Department of Justice, Iowa Attorney General’s Office in cases involving civil liability, except where that liability is proven to be due to negligence.
